Nylon Gill Nets For Herring and Mackerel (Sheet only)

Gill nets consist of a single wall of netting weighted at the bottom and supported at the top by floats attached to a head rope so it hangs vertically (at slack water) in the water column. Most bottom-set gill nets use a braided synthetic rope headline with floats around every 1-3m apart. The greater the buoyancy on the headline the more stiffly the net will hang in the water. Braided rope is preferred to twisted rope as it stop the nets spinning up during fishing.

The foot rope is weighted by leadline. We supply lead line weighing between 3kg and 11kgs per 100m.

Most gill nets are rigged by half, meaning a 200yd stretched sheet net will make a 100yd net when rigged and ready to fish.

Our herring and mackerel nets are rigged for easy clearing of large hauls of fish.

Many areas have by laws governing the legal mesh size and fishing areas. Please contact your local fisheries officer if you are unsure.

Multi Mono Gill Nets (Sheet Only)

These nets are made from several strands of monofilament twisted together. These form a more flexible net which is sometimes prefered for larger species such as Bass, Pollack and Cod.

By law, Multi-Mono nets must be used if fishing in Scotland.

Large Mesh Tangle Nets (Sheet only)

Sheet Nets for Brill, Turbot, Monkfish, Skate and Shellfish

Tangle nets are single-walled nets that closely resemble a standard gill net. The main difference is the greater amount of slack netting set into the headline which results in a more loosely hung net. This mean that flatfish, rays, monkfish and shellfish such as spider crabs and crayfish become easily entangled without their heads getting caught in a single mesh.

Terminology, for example

0.70 This is the diameter of the monofilament the net is made from
10 1/2" Stretched mesh measurement from top of the diamond to the bottom
10 1/2MD This is how many meshes deep the net is. This determines the height.
1000 Meshes long. This is the stretched measurement of the net. Multiply the mesh size by the number of meshes to work out stretched length. Tangle nets have longer stretched length than gill nets. This makes them slacker when the are rigged to the finished length of 100 yards.

Trammel Nets (Sheet Only)

Pre-joined Trammels. The walls are taped to the inner mesh and are suitable for machine or hand rigging. They are quicker to rig than gill nets because you don't need to count the meshes. The tape soon washes off leaving the net hanging on the staples or the walls can be locked to the ropes as with conventional trammel rigging.

Any of the nets can be supplied rigged and the range includes nets suitable for anchoring, bottom drifting and mid-water drifting. Great nets at a great price.
